We all know that physical activity and exercise is good for you. The research reported in the British Medical Journal indicates that cycling to work has extraordinary health benefits.
Apart from the increased self-esteem and confidence that getting fitter and leaner will give you, simply spending more time outside will cheer you up. This is thanks to the ability of sunlight to boost your levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin.
One of the most attractive advantages of cycling for fitness is that you can combine it with commuting, getting to work earlier and fresher after an invigorating ride. You’ll also be becoming fitter by the day without really trying, and feeling and looking younger.
“Usually, I take 2 buses and then a 20 minute walk to work, which makes for an hour commute on a good day. When Vickie mentioned that ‘Ride your Bike to Work’ week was coming up, it kicked my bicycle enthusiasm into gear.
A few years ago, when I was studying in Japan, bicycles were hands down my transport of choice. There’s an amazing bike culture in Japan, which the UK could really benefit from. Not only does it allow a moment to reflect, but it is great exercise, rolling my commute and workout into one. Bonus: saving £££’s on Gym Membership? Yes please. With so many cycle paths available around, it’s also so easy to avoid the traffic.
So, starting this week, I began cycling in to work. The first day was rocky in all senses of the word. I managed to take a half-hour detour through the Wiltshire countryside, which was glorious (there are facets of Swindon I never knew existed outside of kebab shops and concrete), but not exactly time-efficient. I’ve since managed to cut my journey almost in half, and in two months my bike would have paid for itself with how much I’m saving on transport.
It also helps exponentially that my bike is so darn pretty. Sage green, vintage style with a basket on the front…All I need now is a baguette and a bunch of flowers to complete the image.
10/10 would recommend a cycle commute to anyone!”
This week is Bike Week, maybe this will be the week to kick-start your cycling! It’s also worth speaking to your employer about the bike to work scheme!
