With the rising cost of living, bills, inflation and everything in between – you could be wondering how to ask for a raise. We know it can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time making the request or you love your current role and work colleagues. So, with you in mind, we have compiled a handy guide on how to earn more without changing jobs!
Going in blind to this conversation will set you up for confusion and most likely failure. Take your time to research what the going rate for your position is. Look through job boards and talk to colleagues to figure out where you stand and what is a viable and achievable amount for you to ask for. Donโt be embarrassed to talk to your colleagues about pay, not discussing wages is an outdated practice that only keeps you in the dark and your pay down!
We spend all day every day with our ear to the ground of the job market. Receiving constantly updated knowledge of pay standards in our specialised sectors. If youโre struggling to figure out what your pay cheque should look like, give us a call. We can instantly tell you if your pay is lingering behind current standards. Alternatively, look at our live jobs by clicking here to see if any of our roles match or beat your wage!
It can be tempting to enter the meeting with a range of your ideal pay increase. However, if you do this, it makes it difficult to move from the lowest number in your range. Go in at the top. This means you have wiggle room to negotiate down a little while still being happy with the outcome. Make sure youโre the first person to mention any number value, you need to lead the meeting as you are the one making a request.
Come into the meeting prepared with an overview of your performance, give yourself a mini review beforehand. Be prepared to demonstrate your value and explain why you think this raise is deserved. For example, recount extra responsibilities you have taken on recently, or a project you excelled in. Make sure to be ready to back yourself, if you donโt think you deserve to ask for a raise, your lack of confidence will be clear and effect the conversation.
Sometimes timing is everything. If your company has had a particularly bad few months, or faced issues recently like losing a big client, it might not be the best time to make a request. It would be best to wait until things pick up and are profitable again. However, if you really just canโt wait for that pay increase, it could be time to start looking for a new role. Which is where we come in!
We hope these tips has helped you feel more confident to ask for a raise. If you got rejected for a raise and youโre struggling to feel motivated for your job with no progression on the horizon, it could be time to make a change. Take a look at our blog on signs to recognise itโs time to find a new role here and head over to our jobs page to see if anything better paying with better benefits catches your eye!
