Untitled design

Whether you work in a small team or a large one, you could be left scratching your head about how to get your manager to really notice your input. We’ve compiled a list of top 10 tips for you! With direct input from co-directors Nick and Michelle, we speak with expertise on how to be the standout team member, putting you at the top of the list for pay raises, promotion, trust and development.

1. BE INVOLVED

It sounds simple, but in the new wave of remote and hybrid working, simply making an effort to interact goes a long way. Turn up for teams calls with an input, offer thoughts and opinions and simply put – be present! This is an easy way to establish yourself as a knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated team member.

2. WHATS YOUR STYLE?

We all prefer communicating in different ways. Get to know your own and your managers communication style and bridge any gaps between them that arise. For example, you might have to make more of an effort to convert to communicating through emails rather than phone calls or instant messaging to create a strong line of communication to your manager.

3. TAKE OWNERSHIP

Put as much effort as you can into even the small stuff and really own your role responsibilities. This includes when things go wrong! Owning your role includes the hiccups along the way, your team and manager will respect you more if you can admit your mistakes and provide the solution.

4. DELIVER TO EXPECTATIONS

You will quickly establish the level of standard your manager expects from you. Ensuring all of your work is produced to that standard and above means your manager can trust you to get the job they hired you for done, and on top of that, easily tell when you’re ready for the next step up in your career.

5. COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Communication is a two-way street, be open and available with your contact. This doesn’t just mean to make sure your achievements are heard, makes sure you’re clear about problems you face, help you need and the status of your projects. Keeping your manager in the loop at check points in your project will reduce the need for micro-management and allow your manager to relax as they trust you to keep them in the know.

6. BE PUCTUAL

Being on time is a simple thing that connects all elements of your work. From arriving at the office to completing tasks to agreed deadlines, being on time is important. However, we’re all human, so linking back to communication, if you need allowances make sure to let your manager know!

7. BE LOUD AND PROUD

If you care about your tasks, it shines through in your results. Taking pride in your work and genuinely caring about the outcome of your projects will quickly become evident.

8. KEEP YOUR PROMISES

Some people can fall into the trap of over promising results and then appearing to fail even if good results are achieved. Base your promises on fact rather than fantasy. Your manager will be happier if you’re meeting or exceeding your targets over you setting unrealistic goals that you can’t provide.

9. SHOW INTEREST IN THEIR LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK

Stay clear of overstepping boundaries, but remember your manager is a person with an outside life too. Don’t save getting to know people for just your seniority level! Connecting with everyone on a team and creating healthy work relationships can boost productivity, results and make a better office atmosphere.

10. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM

Helping your team out at busy times goes a long way. You don’t have to, and shouldn’t, take on more than your fair share. However, stepping up to the plate when your team needs you will create a positive impact that will echo throughout your work.

We hope these 10 tips on how to make your manager notice you more have given you some guidance on how you can be a standout member of your team. Check out more blogs below for expertise advice today!
