In this series, “A Day in the Life,” we delve into the stories of candidates who have found their perfect fit through Niche Recruitment. This month, we’re diving head-first into the world of a Copywriter. Meet Lottie Walker! Keen-eyed readers would’ve noticed we’ve previously written a blog post dedicated to Lottie’s successful placement, but this time we want to find out about what her day-to-day looks like as a Copywriter.
With a passion for all things creative, Lottie graduated with an English Literature degree from Royal Holloway University and settled into the world of digital marketing. Having worked in roles that involved occasional copywriting, Lottie came to Niche Recruitment looking for a full-time Copywriting position. With the help of Niche Recruiter and Director Michelle Graham, Lottie landed the role of Copywriter with BCS The Chartered Insitute of IT.
Now 8 months into her role, Lottie described her favourite aspect of being a Copywriter; ‘I love being able to transform words into compelling stories that resonate with people. There’s something immensely satisfying when you craft just the right sentiment that leaves people thinking about the message for a long time and coming back for more.’
From in-depth research to afternoon editing, curious to discover how a working day unfolds for a Copywriter? Let’s dive in.
‘The right way of course…with a very large mug of coffee. Then I usually set aside ten minutes every morning to go through my daily/ weekly tasks and make sure that everything is on track. Organisation is very important when you have a lot of different jobs and projects coming in.’
‘I wish I could say Iโm the type of person who goes for an early morning jog and drinks ginger shots to get myself ready for a productive dayโฆ but Iโd be lying. Although Iโve started cycling into work, and I will say, those exercise gurus are definitely onto something, because I usually have a much more productive day after some fresh air.
In reality, for me, getting into the right mindset varies on the project. I usually like to set aside a decent amount of time to research whatever Iโm working on. Not only can I get to know the project inside out, but I also find inspiration usually clicks for me during the research stage. Getting a solid plan/first draft is good for my productivity as well, because itโs always easier to edit than it is to write something from scratch. So, even if my first draft isnโt perfect, itโs still something I can work on and fine-tune.
Iโm only in the office one or two days a week, but whenever Iโm in I always enjoy it. Everyone is lovely, and very supportive not just of your work life but also your personal life. It’s nice to have a face-to-face catch-up with my team, ask what everyone got up to at the weekend or discuss any future plans people are excited about. Granted, general productivity may be slightly reduced when weโre in the office, but building a good team environment is just as important for an engaging workplace.’
‘We use a management software called Asana that basically lists all of the projects I have coming up, with deadlines, specifications etc. Every morning I set aside ten minutes to check through this, to make sure everything is on track, and see what Iโm due to work on that day.
Mornings are usually when Iโm most productive, so I usually make sure my research/drafting is scheduled for then. That leaves me with slightly less taxing tasks for the afternoon when my brain is more likely to turn to mush.
‘When Iโm working from home I usually take my dog for a walk at lunchtime. It forces me to step away from the computer and turns my brain off for 30 minutes or so, which really helps me reset’
‘I’m definitely more creative in the mornings, so I tend to keep my proofing/editing tasks for the afternoon. These are usually less involved, so if Iโm feeling the kind of sluggish a strong coffee canโt solve, then I donโt fall behind on anything.’
‘Stepping away from my computer really helps. Even if itโs just to make a cuppa. Usually, if I can get away from it and let my mind unwind then I can come back to a project with a fresh pair of eyes for the afternoon.’
I usually double-check my emails to make sure I havenโt missed anything important before I log off. I like to do something active after work. Usually, my partner and I go climbing or go for a nice long walk with the dog. It’s nice to get moving after a day at a desk. Although, if it’s been a particularly long, tiring day I’m also not opposed to monging out on the sofa watching Netflix.
โNiche is the best recruitment agency I’ve worked with. I honestly couldnโt fault it. I mostly worked with Michelle and she was absolutely brilliant (though I did also have a conversation with Amber just after my interview, and she was also lovely). Michelle really focused on finding a role that worked for me, rather than moulding me to suit a role (an experience Iโve had in the past with a different agency). She was very supportive and it was a pleasure working with her.’
