In this series, “A Day in the Life,” we delve into the stories of candidates who have found their perfect fit through Niche Recruitment. This time, we’re going behind the scenes with Owen Warne, Head of Membership Sales at Business West. Owen was presented with the job opportunity by Niche Co-Director Nick Wimshurst. Instantly excited about the role, Owne described what appealed to him about the job, explaining; ‘ I’ve always enjoyed working with and supporting businesses, and working at Business West is all about that’.
Using our two-way video platform, Owen presented his full personality to the Hiring Manager and explained that; ‘The two-way video service was very easy to use and clearly helped me present myself’.
Now 5 months into his role as Head of Membership Sales at Business West, Owen described his favourite aspect of his new job role explaining, ‘ Aside from the variety of businesses I get to talk to, My favourite part of my new job role, is the rest of the team at Business West. It’s such an incredibly welcoming and friendly organisation, driven to improve the people within.’
From optimising LinkedIn as a Sales tool to managing a sales team, are you curious to see how a day in the life of a Head of Sales unfolds? Let’s dive in.
How do you like to start your day as a Head of Sales?
Owen:
‘It always starts with my 2-and-a-half-year-old climbing into bed with us at around 6 a.m. After that, it depends on what Iโm doing that day and where I need to be, but nothing ever happens without coffee! Being able to spend the time in the morning with my kids tends to set me up well. I also like to have music on or a podcast to get me going.’
What’s the atmosphere like in the morning amongst the team?
Owen:
Again it depends on which office Iโm in or the event Iโm attending but thereโs usually plenty of energy, plenty of humour and a generally great vibe. Itโs always supportive so if anyone is ever not at 100%, thereโs plenty of people ready to pick up the slack or help get your levels up.’
What’s the first thing you do when you sit down at your desk?
Owen:
‘Check my diary. I can then plan the rest of my day around whatโs already in there and block out some time if needed to do specific tasks. I’ll take time to reply to anything I didnโt get around to the day before, catch up with my team (I do this on Monday and Friday mornings), and I also spend some time on LinkedIn. Iโm currently challenging myself to post a video every day to increase and improve my content output.’
What’s one thing you like to do at lunch that helps you reset?
Owen:
‘If Iโm at home, itโs a chance to hang out with my daughter and my wife. If Iโm in an office, I like to get outside for fresh air, and failing all of that, I like to read. Iโm currently reading โContagiousโ by Johan Berger.’
Afternoon
What are some of the tasks you try and get done in the afternoon?
Owen:
‘I quite often have meetings in the afternoon but if I donโt Iโll be responding to emails, usually about an event we have coming up. As our events calendar is getting busier all the time, thereโs a lot more to discuss internally and with external partners.’
What time of day do you feel your most productive?
Owen:
‘This depends. Some mornings I come out flying and others I feel like I can barely write an email. On other days, Iโm invincible in the afternoon. I pity people as they put meetings in my diary not knowing which version theyโll get!’
How do you cope with an afternoon slump?
Owen:
‘I try to drink more water, or Iโll get out for a quick walk around the block. If Iโm home, I try to be available for when my boys come home from school to have a quick chat as that usually fills my energy levels back up.’
End of Day
How do you like to wrap up your workday?
Owen:
‘Iโll have a look through my emails to see if thereโs anything Iโve missed or needs flagging for follow-up the next day, then I’ll quickly look through LinkedIn to see if thereโs any Business West content to reshare and then shut my laptop down.’
Would you recommend Niche Recruitment to a friend looking for work?
Owen:
‘Absolutely. Iโve been lucky enough to use them as a candidate on the search for a job and as a client hiring people through them and theyโve been great on both occasions.’
